Construction loans differ from existing property loans in that they are short-term, only allowing for the builder to draw from it in phases. (The buyer never has access to these funds during the building process.) Once the build is completed, the loan will convert to a “permanent” or standard mortgage loan.
Typically, your payments during the construction period are interest-only. Down payments may be higher than standard mortgage loans, but you may be able to use equity in your current home to meet that number.
